___________________________________________________
This is a user supported program. You are my best
distributor. Please give a copy of HDM to your
friends, upload it to your local bulletin board,
or take a copy to your PC users group for the disk
librarian. Thank you for your help. Jim Hass.
Hard Disk Menu Installation Notes
Use the batch file INSTALL.BAT to install HDM IV
for the first time. A> INSTALL C:\HDM will copy
all the files from the diskette in A: to the hard
disk directory C:\HDM.
Use the batch file UPDATE.BAT to upgrade an exist-
ing Hard Disk Menu. A> UPDATE C:\HDM will copy
only needed files and will convert all your menu
entries so they are all retained for the new menu.
HDM must be started from its own directory, not
through the DOS path. That way HDM knows where
its menu files are. You will need a path set to
COMMAND.COM and the HDM temporary work file X.BAT.
AUTOEXEC.BAT Example: PATH C:\;C:\HDM
(If command.com in c:\ CD \HDM
and x.bat in c:\hdm.) HDM
If you exit HDM, enter X to restart HDM from DOS.

How to use the Main Menu
The Main Menu is split into two windows. One is
the Page Index and the other has your menu entries.
As different pages are highlighted in the Page
Index, entries from those pages show in the menu
window. To highlight a page, use the PgUp & PgDn
keys or press the letter shown at the left of the
page description. If a page is empty it is skipped.
Each page has up to ten entries. To start an entry,
highlight it by using the Up or Down arrow keys,
then press the Enter key or just press the number
shown at the left of the menu entry description.
If an entry has a password, HDM will ask for it
before starting it. Set passwords from the Security
pull down window or by pressing Alt-F1. The cursor
skips all empty pages and empty menu entries. The
left and right windows can be swapped by pressing
F8 or through the Local pull down window. To add,
change, delete, or move entries use the Menu pull
down window or the keys described on the next page.

A Main Menu entry consists of a Menu Description
and a Menu Action. The description can be up to 48
characters long. It is what the user sees in the
HDM Main Menu as menu entries. The action is what
the menu does when the user chooses one of the Main
Menu entries. It consists of DOS commands, batch
files, programs, and special HDM {functions}
seperated by the tilde ~ character.
For more info see "Menu Action" & "Menu Functions"
PAGE Maintenance Pull Down Window... Alt-P
COMPRESS moves the entries to the top of the page.
ERASE all non password protected entries in a page.
IMPORT a page of entries from another page or file.
NAME (Alt-F2) change name in the Page Index window.
SWITCH entries in two pages in the same menu file.
This menu lets you make changes to the names in the
page index and lets you erase all the non-password
protected entries in one page at once. Page import
lets you copy a page of main menu entries from any
menu file (including the current one) to a page in
the current menu file. Entries are only copied to
matching ones in the current file that are empty.
Any existing entries will not be overwritten, so if
you want to copy all ten entries in a page, make
sure you copy them to a completely empty page.
Compress moves all entries in a page to the top of
that page and leaves all the empty entries at the
bottom. You can switch the contents of two pages.
SECURITY Password Pull Down Window... Alt-S
ALL MAIN MENU ENTRIES: one password for all entries
FILE CHANGE PASSWORD: protect entries from changes.
HIDE THE TOP MENU (use /UNHIDE to unhide it)
LOGOFF AUTOMATICALLY: set time for auto logoff.
MASTER PASSWORD: use this to override any password.
SET PASSWORD (Alt-F1): protect one main menu entry.
TOP MENU ENTRIES: one password for all pull downs.
USER ID MAINTENANCE: add user names and passwords.
Set up a master password before others. This is
the one that the security administrator should set
and save because it can override all passwords in
HDM. If other passwords are forgotten, just enter
the master password instead. You can protect the
main menu entries individually or as a group, you
can also put passwords on pull down menu entries
individually or as a group. To remove passwords,
start the procedure to set them, enter the old
password when asked for, and it will be deleted.
LOCAL Variables Pull Down Window... Alt-L

Changes to any of the above variables affect only
the current menu file. There are a total of 1000
menu files all together, each can have a different
set of local variables. The menu files are named
HDM.000 through HDM.999. You create or access them
using the {MENU ###} action function in any of the
main menu entries. You can give each of your menu
files a completely different look on the screen
when you call them up by using different colors,
borders, lines, titles, etc.
GLOBAL Variables Pull Down Window... Alt-G
BLINKING CURSOR: change the cursor blink speed.
DATE/TIME FORMAT: US/European date, 12/24 Hr clock.
INACTIVE EXECUTE: auto exec after inactive time.
MOUSE SPEED: set the horizontal and vertical speed.
PHONE PARAMETERS: change com port and dial type.
SCREEN SAVE: set screen save time and message.
TIMED EXECUTION: set up auto running of entries.

matter which menu file your in. You can change the
the rate of blinking of the cursor, and change the
sensitivity of the horizontal and vertical motion
of the mouse. Set the date and time format. Set
tone or pulse dialing and the communication port
for the {DIAL} function. Set the screen save time
before your screen blanks out and an optional user
message. The timed execution facility lets you run
menu entries unattended at a set time of day, any
day(s) of the week or any day(s) of the month.
EXIT Pull Down Window... Alt-X
DOS WINDOW (F9): just like being at the DOS prompt.
LOGOFF (Alt-F3): logoff user and go to logo screen.
RESUME HDM: return to the Main Menu from anywhere.
EXIT HDM (F3): go to DOS prompt. Enter X to return.
The DOS window can be used to run anything that can
be used in a normal main menu entry, including DOS
commands, batch files, programs, action functions,
and macros. It also retains the last nine entries
run from it. You can scroll through them with the
arrow keys and change them or just run them as they
are. Resume HDM returns to the main menu no matter
where you are in the Hard Disk Menu. Exit takes
HDM completely out of memory and gives you the DOS
prompt. Key in X at the DOS prompt to return to
the Hard Disk Menu when your done. The {EXIT} or
{QUIT} action functions work exactly the same way.
HDM IV leaves nothing behind in memory and does not
invoke a secondary command processor when you exit.
What the Menu Action Consists of
The Menu Action can contain up to 255 characters of
any DOS commands, programs (COM or EXE), or batch
files (BAT). These are seperated by the tilde ~
character like this: C:~CD\WP~WP~
If the program you want to run is in a directory
that can be found through the DOS path, then you
do not need to specify the drive and directory.
The Menu Action would then just be this: WP~
NOTE: To run batch files you must put @@ in front
of the batch file name: C:~CD\BATCHDIR~@@BATFILE~
! as first char runs inside HDM. (small programs)
~ represents the ENTER key. (~ replaced by CR/LF)
@@ used by batch files. (@@ replaced by COMMAND /C)
{functions} are special HDM functions. {64 chr max}
Macros: &0 thru &9 or {&0 p1 p2 .. p9} are replaced
by the contents of a macro. (set in Local menu)
Macro parameters: %1 thru %9 are replaced by the
contents of the macro parameter. (p1 p2 .. p9)
Examples of action text
C:~CD \LOTUS~123~
This would start up the 1-2-3 program from a sub-
directory named LOTUS on the C: drive. When you
leave 1-2-3 you will return to Main Menu.
{CK A}A:~CHKDSK~PAUSE~@@DB3SAVE~
This action will check if the A: drive is ready,
then switch to it and run CHKDSK on it, then wait.
When a key is hit, the batch file DB3SAVE will be
executed and you return to the same menu display.
Make sure you use @@ or .BAT file will not return.
COPY {?ENTER PATH AND FILE NAME TO PRINT:} LPT1:~
When this selection is picked from the menu, the
bottom edit window will display and ask:
ENTER PATH AND FILE NAME TO PRINT:
If the user of the menu keys in C:\PC-TALK\README
the file will be copied from disk to the printer.
The {?TEXT} is replaced by the user entry, in this
case it changed to: COPY C:\PC-TALK\README LPT1:
